Mesa Merino
Project Snapshot
MesaMerino is a Merino-based apparel system designed for the Woolmark Performance Challenge 2022: a head-to-toe kit that supports a female ultra-runner through the 100-mile Zion trail race with pain relief, consistent fit, and responsive thermoregulation.
Athlete & Race Context
MesaMerino was built around Mak, a 23-year-old trail runner and CrossFitter training for the Zion 100 Miler. Her needs: safety on unsupported backcountry sections, smart storage for nutrition and gear, chafe-free support, and lightweight layers that work from 37–74°F without being stashed or discarded between aid stations.
Material Innovations
The system combines three Merino-centered innovations: medicinal yarns infused with lanolin, sweet anise, and balsam for heat-activated anti-inflammatory relief; “Shape Shifter” recycled wool keratin coils that help garments hold fit over 100 miles; and 3D-printed keratin vents that curl open with body heat and sweat to boost airflow.
What Is Mesa Merino?
Pain Relief
- Native Pueblo cultures in Zion used balms made of local plants like sweet anise + balsam to reduce inflammation
- Fibers impregnated with lanolin + local traditional medicines can reduce inflammation during the Zion 100 Miler
Consistent Fit
- Recycled Merino wool keratin coils are blended with Merino wool + knitted into areas that must maintain fit around the athlete’s body
- Keeps garment well-fitting on athlete’s body over any 100 mile race to reduce chafing + provide support
Thermoregulation
- Desert big horn rams, indigenous to Zion, minimize heat load + energy expenditure by vigorously panting, their moving hair allows for better airflow + thermoregulation
- Shape changing Keratin material finish contracts when athlete’s temperature + sweat increase, improving airflow to the body
